We are made up of tangible layers, multiple identities & personas, playing countless roles. We are mirrors to ourselves, to each other, reflecting light, projecting shadows. Can we only see our true selves when our eyes are covered and coerced to look within. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, beyond the veil, what is our primeval appearance?

SAVE THE UNICORNS. 2016. OPPI KOPPI.
Unicorns exist in the collective imagination of those who choose to play in the realms of non conformity, non binaries and fluid self expression. The stand for a safe liminal space where an ordinary encounter with one of these creatures can transmorgify ones perceptions about ones reality, boundries and belief systems. They ask for nothing more than a wide open receptive mind, unmediated by judgements and objectification.
“Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn. Then always be a unicorn.” Anonymous Unicorn.
gRRR Kollective was invited by Bye Beneco to appear on stage as their exclusive backup performance act. We set out to take the audience on a performative journey of visual poetry on the brink of a vivid undercurrent. These fantastical, mythological creatures from the depths of our crevassed imaginations combined, were melodically infused with the psychedelic soundscape of Bye Beneco to infiltrate and transcend the minds of the crowds. Grrr Performers: Gina Kraft and Jessica Doucha.

VENUS IN FURS. BASSLINE JOHANNESBURG. 2016.
Not only were we surrounded and inspired by a pack of kick ass female front musicians, Venus In Furs was a wild and playful opportunity for GRRR Kollective to take risks.
Being a Unicorn allows one the freedom to explore one’s creative and metaphorical outlets, giving one a platform to express a dialogue around gender and sexuality, in a very abstract yet empowering manner. Its not everyday one gets to be a real life unicorn.
